Lesson 10: The Computer as a Tutor

Content

The computer is one of the wonders of human ingenuity, even in its original design to carry out complicated mathematical and logical operations. The computer is a tutor in this new age of learning. It does not replace the teacher, although it assumes certain roles previously assigned to teachers who now has to take the new role of facilitator and guide.
Computer activities are not also the end-all of le3arning since they have to conform to the lessons/curriculum. Integrating computer exercises in the new task of the teacher who can find in the computer and computer software an alternative medium to the traditional classroom practice of delivering information and supporting learning activities.
In the years ahead, we shall see the computer in schools as a common tool for the enhancement of the student’s thinking, communication and collaboration skills. Computers will become an integral component of the future classroom and not a mere machine that can deliver routine and exercise.

Experience

Our teacher in Cell Biology way back 3rd year – 1st semester gave us an activity which really caught our interest. It is a virtual activity learning. She gave us a copy of software and let us conduct the said activity. It is like a game but we really need to think critically because if we fail following the steps we cannot also answer the questions correctly. We are actually like a detective in the activity. We need to solve the crime happened by collecting evidences of DNA and test it in the laboratory. There are 3 kinds of laboratory and we need to choose its appropriate usage. After every activity, we automatically receive the result/score.

Reflection

Educator nowadays saw much use of personal computer. Even though technology invaded the learning style of the students, it should be clear that the computer cannot totally replace the teacher since the teacher shall continue to play the major roles of information deliverer and learning environment controller.
Teacher must not let the students do activities without prior knowledge. Teacher must always there as facilitator when students do activities on their own pace to monitor in achieving the expected outcome. Giving simulation activities is good in helping students develop the skills in creating, solving problem, decision making, etc. But the role of the teacher as facilitator is necessary in this activities.

Application

AS future science educator, I will give activities to my students focuses on learning by doing. By applying the CAI (Computer –Assisted Instruction) since technology nowadays are really inferring the teaching-learning process. I will also give them virtual learning activity same as what I’ve experienced. That is to test how good they are in terms of following the step by step process while helping them develop skills especially in decision making.
