Lesson 4: Bridging the Generation Gap

CONTENT

The older generation often feels there is a generation gap between them and the younger generation in the field of education. It will continue to widen unless some changes are adopted at the proper time. Given the speed and power of ICT for change, growth innovation, it becomes critical that teachers understand the gap that may be perceived between them and the new generation of learners.
Since the new generations are expected to face a future professional challenge of a digital world ahead of them, technology-supported skills need to be taught in schools today, or else schools will become a white elephant. If schools fail to respond to emergent changes and needs, new learners may lose appreciation of the educational system, and drop out of school, as survey show an increasing drop-out rate every year.

EXPERIENCE

During my first year in college onward, teachers are not only using board talk-test technique depending on the subject or topic. Instead, they used devices that could enhance the learning of the topic or subject. That is, to get them involved in the fast changing technology. They use it as a tool for easier and understandable discussion.

REFLECTION

Nowadays, fast changing technology is unstoppable in society. And as citizens in society, we have to adapt it. It must be taught in school also so that the young individual will be guided upon using technology correctly. Not only by giving them instructions, information, advantage and disadvantages, instead, letting them explore, construct and experience so that they will be more knowledgeable and skilled full.

APPLICATION

As a future teacher, in order to bridge/connect the generation gap between my students in terms of different culture of their past schools for example, I will always give them a group activity. They will be mixed each other (students from traditional school and students from advance school). Through these, they will collaborate each other, sharing of ideas, and come up with good result.

Lesson 3: Understanding Technology Learners

CONTENT

Today’s learners appear smarter, yet they can’t read as their parents do and they are addicted to the internet. The concern for new learners is valid. On the other hand, it is to be admitted that our teachers today generally use the traditional education program applicable to learners of the past, acquainted with linear, textual, and sequential learning. They feel to realize that the new generation of the 21st millennium is not the kind that they were, but are information technology or digital learners.
Truly, there are valid concerns which must be met, and among these is the feared underdevelopment of new learners along social face-to-face interaction skills. On the other hand, there is the phenomenon of the young generation taking on multi-tasking as they perform task simultaneously. True to say, research shows that multi-tasking can be detrimental since this prevents concentration and completion of specific tasks. However, multi-tasking characterizes professional work in the new world of information technology. There is the need therefore to balance the good and possibly detrimental changes observed among new learners of this information technology age.

EXPERIENCE

Teaching and learning process prior to my college life is really different from today’s teaching and learning process. Focusing only a paper-pencil technique and always writing in the board is quite difficult to learn easily and time consuming. I really have hard time on documenting and developing skills in handling computer way back my high school life. This is due to the lack of facilities also and the computer in-charge is very strict that we could only use it often times.

REFLECTION

Technology as a tool for educative process is beneficiary. Learners can do their task in their own since it must be learner centered. There are lot of things to be learned and skills to develop with the use of technology integration. But, all things exist also have disadvantages. This can be overcome through teacher’s management. The teacher then has a very big role in doing everything for the students to learn what must be learned and develop the skills that must be developed. If everything was done successfully, learners then on their way in becoming a competitive individual.

APPLICATION

As a future teacher, there must be a balance in using technology as a tool in teaching. If the subject or topic needs technology for better understanding, then, I could use video clips, audio visual, movie (if needed). But if the topic doesn’t really need it (technology), then, I could use models, mock ups, etc. making my discussion easier to understand.

Lesson 2: An Overview; Educational Technology II

CONTENT

Educational Technology II is concerned with “Integrating Technology into Teaching and Learning”. Specifically this is focused on introducing, reinforcing, supplementing and extending the knowledge and skills to learners so that they can become exemplary users of educational technology. This course intends to help our target learners to weave technology in teaching, with software becoming a natural extension of their learning tools.
In essence, the course aims to infuse technology in the student-teachers training, helping them to adapt to rapid and continuing technological changes. That is, to provide education in the use of technology in instruction, to impart learning experiences in instructional technology supported instructional planning, to acquaint students of IT related learning theories with the computer as a tutor, to learn to use and evaluate computer-based educational resources, to engage learners on practical technology integration, and to inculcate higher-level thinking and creativity among students while providing them knowledge of IT-related learning theories.

EXPERIENCE

Way back to the activities we had in Educational Technology I, it showed us how technology a very useful in enhancing teaching and learning through technology integration. Our instructor gave us various activities for us to learn and develop our hidden talent and skills because it will be very useful in our future carrier.

REFLECTION

In this topic, it reminds us how to provide education in the use of technology in instruction. This will help us in our student-teachers training to meet and adapt the rapid and continuing technological changes so that we will be able to use technology as a tool in appropriate topic or subject. That is, helping the learners to learn easily and making learning be fun.

APPLICATION

As a future teacher, I will not let my students to get bored in my class. Since I am a science teacher, I will give them various activities letting them to explore and experience. It may be a form of group activities or individual involving technology integration in instruction in some activities. However, if the activity for the certain topic doesn’t really need technology, then, I could use other materials just to meet their needs. I could use technology as a tool for instruction anyway but not always in evaluation.

Lesson 1: A Review in Educational Technology I

Name: Lesly B. Tecson                                                Class Schedule: MW(3:00-5:00)
Subject: Educational Technology II                                         Date: July 10, 2015
Topic: Lesson 1; A Review in Educational Technology I

CONTENT

To understand the meaning of educational technology, it may be good to begin with the meaning of technology. The word “technology” comes from the Greek word “techne” which means craft or art. Based on the etymology, therefore, refers to the art or craft of responding to our educational needs.
Educational technology is a complex, integrated process involving people, procedures, ideas, devices and organization for analyzing problems and devising, implementing, evaluating and managing solutions to those problems, involved in all aspects learning.

                                                                TECHNOLOGY

Boon
Bane

Technology contributes much to the improvement of the teaching-learning process and to the humanization of life. It is indeed a blessing. But when not used properly, it becomes a detriment to instruction and human progress and development.
Technology is made for man and not man for technology. Technology is made for the teacher and not the teacher for technology. This means that technology is meant to serve man in all aspects of life including instruction. It is man, and in the context of the classroom, the teacher, who determines how technology ought to be used in order to reap the maximum benefits that come along with technology. Technology is in our hands. We can use it to build or destroy.

Instructional Objectives
The broad definition of educational technology encompasses systems or designs of instructions. Instruction begins with the definition of instructional objectives that consider the learner’s needs, interests and readiness. On the basis of these objectives, the teacher selects the appropriate teaching methods to be used and chooses also the appropriate learning experiences and material, equipment and facilities. The use all of this things must necessary assign an appropriate personnel to assist the teacher and defining the role of any personnel involved in the preparation, setting and returning of these learning resources. The teacher then implements planned instruction with the use of the selected teaching method, learning activities, and learning materials with the help of other personnel whose role has been defined by the teacher. After instruction, teacher evaluates the outcome of instruction. If the instructional objective was attained, teacher proceeds to the next lesson going through the same cycle. The focus of the instructional planning is the learner.

Cone of Experience

Next is the Cone of Experience. It is a visual model, a pictorial device that presents bands of experience arranged according to degree of abstraction. Let us expound on each of them starting with the most direct.
  •   Direct purposeful experiences – These are firs hand experiences which serves as the foundation of our learning.
  •  Contrived experiences – We make use of a representative models or mock ups of reality for practical reasons and so that we can make the real-life accessible to the student’s perceptions and understanding.
  •  Dramatized experiences – Participating in a reconstructed experience.
  • Demonstrations – It is a visualized explanation of an important fact, idea or process by the use of photographs, drawing, films, displays or guided motions.
  • Study trips – These are excursions, educational trips, and visits conducted to observe an event that is unavailable within the classroom.
  • Exhibits – These are displays to be seen by the spectators.
  • Television and motion pictures – These can reconstruct the reality of the past so effectively that we are made to feel we are there.
  • Still pictures, Recordings, Radio – These are visual and auditory devices which may be used by an individual or a group.
  • Visual symbols – These are no longer realistic reproduction of physical things for these are highly abstract representations.
  • Verbal symbols – They are not like the objects or ideas for which they stand. They usually do not contain visual clues to their meaning.

The next part is the application of what has been learned beyond what is written in the book. These are photo editing, rubistar, toondoo, creating short film and edmodo-the online activity.

Photo Editing
Toondoo.com

EXPERIENCE
I learned lot of things from Educational Technology I. It really helps me to explore the essence of technology as a tool for educative process. I know already how to make rubric in a very easy way, faster and reliable using www.rubistar.com. It is my first time also to make comic strips using www.toondoo.com, then editing my picture from ordinary to cover girl of Cosmopolitan magazine using photoshop. And lastly, having online activity using www.edmodo.com.
These experiences were really amazing. It molds me to go beyond what has been written in the book. I really developed my initiative during the activity, as well as the skills and critical thinking.
I believe that what has been learned through action will retain in the long term memory. All of these will be very useful to my future carrier.

REFLECTION
Discussing Educational Technology I prior to Educational Technology II is very important. In this subject, we are taught the basic foundation of technology as an educational tool for learning centered approach. The methods, uses, purposes, roles, advantage and disadvantages about technology as a tool was also tackled for the awareness and knowledge we must acquire for the future carrier.
Technology as a tool for educative processes not only giving us more information but also helping us develops our skills, initiative, and critical thinking. This is to make sure that we as a future teacher will be very prepared in the field of teaching.

APPLICATION
Having an interactive teaching and learning depends on the skills and strategies that the teacher uses. If the topic needs technology as a tool for the learners to visualize, feel or even experience the content and the importance of the topic, then, I can do that such as using motion pictures, short film, audio visual, etc. But if the topic does not really needs technology, then, I can use models, mock ups, etc.as a tool for the learner to understand better rather than pure talking without demonstrating.

As a future teacher, what I have learned in the training field must be retained in mind and heart, because teaching with all your mind and heart is really different from teaching with mind alone.
